International Power History Timeline |
| Pre 1990: Only one nationalised organisation, the Central Electricity Generating Board (CEGB), is responsible for generating and transmitting the bulk supply of electricity in England and Wales. | |

1990: The CEGB is split into three generation companies: National Power, PowerGen and Nuclear Electric, and a single high voltage transmission company: National Grid. National Power inherits 46% of the CEGB's generation capacity and owns and manages 40 power stations in the UK with a total capacity of over 29,000 MW. Within this portfolio National Power has plants that run on a number of different fuels, including coal, gas and oil. It also includes National Wind Power Ltd the largest UK wind farm management company. |

1993-1994: Having gone through the process of privatisation within the UK, a country that has since been at the forefront of market developments in the independent energy sector, National Power takes advantage of its skills, knowledge and financial strength and commences investment in overseas privatisation programmes. International investment becomes a high priority for National Power and the company embarks upon an aggressive international development programme. The success of this programme ultimately leads to National Power's demerger in October 2000. |
